So impressed was George Bell by The Rock, which was performed from 28 May to 9 June 1934 at Sadler's Wells Theatre, that he invited Eliot to write a play for the 1935 Canterbury Festival. The success of the chorus in The Rock encouraged Eliot to give it a prominent role in Murder in the Cathedral, the first title of which, 'Fear in the Way', probably hinted at the rising menace of another European war. With Robert Speaight as Becket, the performance in the chapter house (not far from the spot where Becket was murdered) won Years of Growing Fame 45 such acclaim that the play was staged at the Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate, where, after being hailed by the critic for The Times as ' the one great play by a contemporary dramatist now to be seen in England', it ran for seven months.

Books of the Quarter' reviews did not begin until the eighth number ofjuly 1924. It was fortunate that Eliot had colleagues who were willing to share his more burdensome editorial tasks. They had a common aim, but it was reinforced by his personal ity and integrity. He combined unusual discretion with equally unusual courtesy; Bonamy Dobree was convinced that it was 'really Religious Commitment and Marriage Breakdown 31 natural', though it might seem affected in others. Eliot's worries had deepened.

His subsequent poetry emphasizes the almost insuperable difficulty of attaining a sense of unity with God, that intersection of the timeless with time which he calls Incarnation . It is no inevitable sequitur of a course of devotion; it comes, if it comes at all, spontaneously. Eliot's acceptance of the infinite mystery does not imply mystical experience; he denied that he was a mystic. For him there were only hints and guesses; his reward, as he makes clear at the end of 'The Dry Salvages', was in the constant quest for holiness, and in the hope that dedication would fructify in his life and work.
